The first half of this section covers which money spent in entertainment venues is wasted and where the emergency exits are; the outcome types are money and personal freedom. The second half covers how to relieve stress; the outcome types are energy and all-cause mortality. The numbers in the two halves are not converted into each other. Section 3 already covered which things to do first when you are feeling low; this section gives more concrete ways to do it.

Section 22, Item 1·Outcome  Lifespan

Before you go into a KTV, a bar or an escape room, take a look at where the emergency exits are; if they are locked or blocked, go somewhere else

Value for cost Very high
In plain terms

By regulation, while an entertainment venue is open, its evacuation routes and emergency exits must be kept clear. They may not be sealed off, may not be locked, may not have things placed in the way, and the exit signs may not be covered either. Internet cafés likewise may not seal doors or lock windows. A venue that fails to do this is breaking the law, and you can report it. If the private room is underground, has only one exit, or the corridor is piled with clutter, go somewhere else.

Cost
No money. Look up for 10 seconds as you walk in. No money Done in passing No willpower Benefit size large
Benefit
This is a legal duty of the operator. Failing to do it is breaking the law, and you can report it. The text of the regulations: “During business hours, an entertainment venue shall keep its evacuation routes and emergency exits clear, shall not seal off or lock evacuation routes and emergency exits, and shall not set up railings or other obstacles that hinder evacuation in evacuation routes and at emergency exits.” The regulations also require that it “shall set up conspicuous signs at evacuation routes and emergency exits, and shall not block or cover the signs.” Internet cafés are the same: they are required to observe that “during business hours, sealing off or locking doors and windows, safe evacuation routes and emergency exits is prohibited,” and that “open-flame lighting and smoking are prohibited.”
Evidence grade
A
Notes
If a place has any one of the following, go somewhere else: the private room is underground, there is only one exit, the corridor is piled with clutter, or the emergency exit sign lights are not on. When venues like these catch fire, the smoke is heavy, the corridors are narrow, there are many people, and most of them have been drinking. The time you have to get out is counted in seconds. Under the regulations, the number for reporting should be written on the warning signs inside the venue.

Ask for the price list before you order: entertainment venues must display clear prices, so do not accept “play first, settle up later”

Value for cost Standard
In plain terms

By regulation, when an entertainment venue sells services or goods, it must clearly mark the prices and must also proactively show you the price list. So-called “sky-high drink prices” almost always happen where you never saw a price list and the bill was settled afterward by a verbal quote. When you enter the private room, first ask for the list and take a photo. After you order, ask for a confirmed list as well. If there is a dispute at checkout, call 12315 on the spot.

Cost
No money. Ask for the list once. The hard part is that asking about prices in front of other people feels a little awkward. No money Done in passing Some willpower Benefit size medium
Benefit
The text of the regulations: “Where an entertainment venue provides entertainment services and sells goods, it shall clearly mark the prices and show consumers the price list; it shall not force or deceive consumers into accepting services or buying goods.” Violations of price laws and regulations are penalized by the relevant departments according to law. The great majority of so-called “sky-high drink prices” disputes happen in this kind of situation: no price list was shown, and the bill was settled afterward by a verbal quote.

Notes
How to do it: when you enter the private room, first ask for a price list, paper or electronic, and photograph it as soon as you get it. After you order, ask for a confirmed list as well. For the “special cocktails” and “fruit platters” the staff recommend, always ask the price before ordering. If there is a dispute at checkout, call 12315 on the spot. Do not pay first and then try to defend your rights afterward; once you have paid, it is much harder for you to prove your case.

If someone at a venue passes around “stuff,” leave at once: giving people a place to use and supplying it are not “helping a friend”

Value for cost High
In plain terms

Entertainment venues may not sell drugs, may not supply drugs, and may not let people stay on the premises to use them; a venue that violates this must suspend business for rectification for 3 to 6 months, and in serious cases has its license revoked. If you use drugs yourself, you face a public-security penalty. Letting someone “use a bit” in a private room you booked or in your home is harboring others to use drugs (容留他人吸毒), which is a criminal offense. If someone pulls out an unknown powder, pills or a vape cartridge and invites you to try, leave on the spot.

Cost
No money. Stand up and walk out. The hard part is leaving in front of a whole table of people. No money Done in passing Some willpower Benefit size large
Benefit
The regulations expressly prohibit entertainment venues from “selling or supplying drugs, or organizing, forcing, instigating, luring, deceiving or harboring others to smoke or inject drugs.” Staff may not use drugs either, and may not create conditions for customers to do any of the above. For violations, the public security department confiscates the illegal gains and illegal property and orders the venue to suspend business for rectification for 3 to 6 months. In serious cases, the entertainment business license is revoked. The regulations also require venues to hang warning signs against drugs, gambling and prostitution in prominent places in the hall and in the private rooms and booths, with the number for reporting marked on them.
Evidence grade
A
Notes
Whenever someone takes out an unknown powder, pills or e-cigarette cartridge and invites you to “try it,” leave on the spot; do not stay to watch. The risk you bear personally is heavier than the venue's. Using drugs yourself is in itself subject to a public-security penalty. “Letting a friend use here for a bit” in a private room you booked yourself or in your own home constitutes harboring others to use drugs, which is a criminal offense.

Don't eat candy or snacks from strangers, don't drink anything that has been out of your sight, and don't take vape cartridges others hand you

Value for cost Very high
In plain terms

Today's drugs don't look like drugs. “Head-rush” e-cigarettes laced with synthetic cannabinoids look much like ordinary e-cigarettes, and some people make a point of handing them out for others to try in bars, KTVs and hotels. Someone who tricks others into using is detained for 10 to 15 days and fined 1000 to 5000 yuan, and the person tricked into using is also detained for 10 to 15 days. If a drink has been out of your sight, get another one.

Cost
No money. Accept nothing anyone hands you. If your own glass has been out of your sight, get a new drink. No money Done in passing No willpower Benefit size large
Benefit
Today's drugs don't look like drugs. Since July 1, 2021, synthetic cannabinoids have been controlled as a whole class: the entire category is regulated as drugs. Some people mix them into vape liquid to make “head-rush” e-cigarettes. In a case reported by the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the case handlers described this vape liquid as one that “can be turned into all kinds of colors and flavors by adding food coloring” and that is “basically identical in appearance to ordinary e-cigarettes.” Sellers promoted it in bars, KTVs and hotels by drawing in friends and acquaintances, and induced others to use it. According to the report, among the drug-use cases handled locally that year, minors made up nearly 40% of the users. Etomidate has been on the catalogue of Category II psychotropic drugs since October 1, 2023. Tricking someone into using is itself a separate violation: luring, instigating, deceiving or forcing others to smoke or inject drugs is punished by 10 to 15 days of detention and a fine of 1000 to 5000 yuan. Where it constitutes a crime, the sentence is up to 3 years; in serious circumstances, 3 to 7 years; for forcing someone, 3 to 10 years; and targeting minors is punished more heavily. The consequences also fall on the person who was tricked: smoking or injecting drugs is punished by 10 to 15 days of detention and possibly a fine of up to 3000 yuan. In less serious cases, it is up to 5 days of detention or a fine of up to 1000 yuan. The person may also be ordered at the same time not to enter entertainment venues for 6 months to 1 year. Someone who is addicted is ordered into community-based drug rehabilitation for 3 years. Refusing community-based rehabilitation, or using again during rehabilitation, leads to compulsory isolated drug rehabilitation for 2 years, which can be extended by at most 1 more year (nationwide, under the Public Security Administration Punishments Law (治安管理处罚法) from January 2026).
Evidence grade
A
Notes
This is not only about entertainment venues: the same goes for school gates, get-togethers with friends and long-distance buses. It is also the same whether what you are offered is candy, a drink or a vape cartridge. Being drugged is often followed by robbery, sexual assault and extortion; there are no public official statistics on this part, so it is a judgment based on experience. Getting a new drink whenever yours has been out of your sight is far less trouble than pursuing it afterward. For what to do when someone at a venue takes out an unknown powder, pills or a vape cartridge, see Item 3 of this section. For carrying things for other people, see Section 8, Item 29.

Don't go to murder-mystery or escape-room venues located in residential buildings or on the second basement level or below

Value for cost High
In plain terms

A 2022 notice from five departments states that script-based entertainment venues may not be located inside residential buildings, nor below the first basement level. These places are dark, have many partitions and flammable props, and their doors often open only once you solve a puzzle. If a fire breaks out, they are much harder to escape from than an ordinary shop. Before booking, check the address and floor on the review page; if it does not comply, go somewhere else.

Cost

Benefit
The five departments' dedicated 2022 notice is very specific: “Script-based entertainment business venues shall not be located in residential buildings, below the first underground floor of a building (not including the first underground floor), or similar places.” The notice also requires venues to implement the requirements of the Work Safety Law (安全生产法) and the Fire Protection Law (消防法), and to “routinely carry out self-awareness, self-inspection and self-correction of fire risks, and improve their ability to organize evacuation and escape in emergencies and to put out fires in their initial stage.” The same notice also requires scripts to carry age-appropriateness labels. Where a scenario is unsuitable for minors, minors may not be allowed in. Except on statutory holidays, rest days and winter and summer vacations, venues may not provide script-based entertainment activities to minors.

When you feel low, go for a walk or a run: the antidepressant effect size (how big the effect is) is proportional to intensity

Contested Value for cost Standard
In plain terms

When you feel low, brisk walking or jogging brings the clearest improvement. Next come yoga, strength training, and tai chi or qigong, with little difference among them. The higher the intensity is set, the better the effect, and strength training and yoga are the easiest to stick with. The quality of the evidence here is on the low side; what can be said for sure is that moving beats not moving, so pick the kind you can keep up.

Cost
No money. About half an hour each time. The hard part is that when you feel low you least want to move, so you have to give yourself a push. No money A few hours Lots of willpower Benefit size large
Benefit
This is the result of pooling 218 controlled trials that randomly split participants into two groups. They involved 495 groups and 14170 participants who met the clinical criteria for major depression. The method let the different kinds of exercise be compared with one another (Bayesian network meta-analysis). The comparisons were usual care and placebo pills (active controls). Effect size is expressed as Hedges' g; the more negative the number, the more the symptoms improved. Brisk walking or jogging −0.62 (95% confidence interval −0.80 to −0.45, meaning the true value lies roughly within this range). Yoga −0.55 (−0.73 to −0.36). Strength training −0.49 (−0.69 to −0.29). Mixed aerobic exercise −0.43 (−0.61 to −0.24). Tai chi or qigong −0.42 (−0.65 to −0.21). The paper says “the effects of exercise were proportional to the intensity prescribed”: the higher the intensity is set, the better the effect. Strength training and yoga had the best acceptability and were the easiest to stick with.
Evidence grade
A
Notes
Contested. The authors themselves state that of the 218 studies, only 1 was done cleanly enough not to be easily skewed by its design. By the commonly used grading method, brisk walking or jogging rates only “low” certainty, and the rest “very low.” Exercise also can't be hidden from participants: people know they are exercising, so they tend to feel better, and this expectation can't be removed. The direction of the conclusion is still usable: moving beats not moving, don't set the intensity too low, and choose the kind you can stick with. This expands on Section 3's “when you are feeling low, get moving first,” and cannot replace standard treatment after a diagnosis.

When anxiety gets bad enough to affect your life, a mindfulness-based stress reduction course works no worse than a commonly used anti-anxiety drug

Value for cost Standard
In plain terms

For people diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction course improved symptoms almost exactly as much as taking the anti-anxiety drug escitalopram. Nearly 80% of the people on the drug had adverse effects, and some dropped out because of them. About 15% of the people in the course had them, and no one dropped out. The course has to be the standardized 8-week program; just any meditation app does not count.

Cost
Signing up for the course costs a little money. The course lasts 8 weeks, with one class a week plus daily practice at home. The hard part is practicing every day for 8 weeks straight. A little money Time every day Lots of willpower Benefit size large
Benefit
This was a trial at 3 urban academic medical centers in the United States, designed to see whether the course is worse than the drug (a non-inferiority randomized controlled trial). 276 adults diagnosed with an anxiety disorder were randomized 1:1 into two equal groups. One group took the 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction course. The other took escitalopram (flexible dose of 10 to 20 mg). 208 people completed the whole trial. At the end, on an anxiety severity score rated by clinicians (the Clinical Global Impression of Severity scale), the mindfulness group fell by 1.35 and the drug group by 1.43. The difference between the groups was −0.07 (95% CI −0.38 to 0.23, meaning the true difference lies roughly within this range; P=0.65, meaning this small difference can't be told apart from no difference). The lower end of this range did not cross the line drawn in advance for “not meaningfully worse” (non-inferiority margin −0.495). The adverse effects differed greatly: in the drug group, 78.6% had at least one trial-related adverse event, and 10 people dropped out because of them. In the mindfulness group it was 15.4%, and no one dropped out because of them.
Evidence grade
A
Notes
The trial used the standardized 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction course (MBSR); just any meditation app can't be equated with it. It applies to people who already meet the diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder, and you should still see a doctor. If you have kept putting off treatment because you worry about drug side effects, this is an option with comparable strength of evidence.

To calm down on the spot, do 5 minutes of “cyclic sighing”: breathe in in two parts and draw out the exhale

Value for cost High
In plain terms

Doing 5 minutes of breathing practice a day for a month improved mood and slowed breathing more than the same amount of time spent on mindfulness meditation. Of the several breathing methods, “cyclic sighing,” which draws out the exhale, was best. To do it, breathe in once through your nose, then take a small extra breath in to fill your lungs, and then breathe out slowly and completely through your mouth. This is only one trial, and whether it helped was reported by the participants themselves, but it costs nothing.

Cost
No money. 5 minutes a day. No money Done in passing No willpower Benefit size medium
Benefit
This was a randomized controlled trial done at home, comparing three 5-minute daily breathing practices with the same amount of time spent on mindfulness meditation, over 1 month. The three breathing methods were: cyclic sighing (emphasizing a prolonged exhale), box breathing (inhale, breath-hold and exhale of equal length), and cyclic hyperventilation with breath retention (long inhale, short exhale). Pooling the data from each person and each session (a mixed-effects model), the breathing practices all did better than mindfulness meditation, especially exhale-focused cyclic sighing. It was better both in mood improvement (P<0.05, meaning this difference is unlikely to be just chance) and in the drop in breathing rate (P<0.05).

Notes
To do it: breathe in once through your nose, briefly take a small extra breath in to fill your lungs, then breathe out through your mouth, slowly and at length, until your lungs are empty; repeat for 5 minutes. There is only this one trial, it was done at home, whether it helped was reported by the participants themselves on questionnaires, and the number of people was small. The effect was only slightly better than meditation, and it won't solve your problems. But it costs nothing, takes only 5 minutes, can be done anytime and anywhere, and is good value for cost.

Treat “seeing people regularly” as a health expense, and don't reach out only when you feel low

Contested Value for cost Standard
In plain terms

People who rarely spend time with others had a probability of dying over the same period about 30% higher. People who feel lonely were about a quarter higher, and people who live alone about 30% higher, more markedly in people under 65. All of this comes from following people and observing them; it may also be that people already in poor health are more likely to live alone.

Cost
It costs a little money, plus the time spent meeting. The hard part is having to reach out and make plans even when you are in a good mood. A little money A few hours Some willpower Benefit size large
Benefit
This is the result of pooling 70 studies that first recorded people's circumstances and then followed them forward (a meta-analysis), with 3.4 million participants in total, followed for 7 years on average. Social isolation, loneliness and living alone were all associated with higher mortality. After taking out confounding factors such as age and health status, the weighted average odds ratios were: social isolation 1.29, loneliness 1.26, living alone 1.32. Converted, the probability of dying over the same period was higher by about 30%, about a quarter and about 30% respectively. The effect sizes of the three were similar, and they were larger in people under 65 than in older people.

Notes
Contested. These are all associations observed by following groups of people, not controlled trials with assigned groups, so cause and effect can't be told apart. People already in poor health are more likely to live alone and to socialize less. The authors treat social relationships as a health factor of the same magnitude as smoking and obesity, but no randomized trial has shown that “socializing more lowers mortality.” This item does not conflict with Section 3's “cut down on relationships that drain you”: that item cuts the relationships that drain you, and this one keeps the few that restore your energy.

Count nearby green space when choosing where to live, but don't expect “going to the park more” to lengthen your life

Contested Value for cost Standard
In plain terms

The greener the area within 500 meters of your home, the lower the probability of dying over the same period: about 4% lower for every 0.1 increase in the vegetation index. What was measured is the greenery around the home, not how often you go to the park. In green neighborhoods, the people living there tend to be better off, and the air tends to be better too. So don't take it to mean that going to the park lengthens your life; just count nearby green space when choosing where to live.

Cost
No money. When viewing a home, take a look at the greenery around it while you are there. No money Done in passing No willpower Benefit size small
Benefit
This is the result of pooling 9 studies that followed populations for many years (a meta-analysis of cohort studies), covering 7 countries and 8.32 million people. It looked at how green the surroundings within 500 meters of the home were, measured by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI, a single number that ground greenery is converted into). For every 0.1 increase in the index, the pooled hazard ratio for all-cause mortality was 0.96 (95% CI 0.94–0.97): the probability of dying over the same period was about 4% lower, with the true value lying roughly between 3% lower and 6% lower. Of the 9 studies, 7 found that greener surroundings went with lower mortality, and the difference did not look like chance either. The other 2 saw no association.
Evidence grade

Notes
Contested. The results of the individual studies differed widely (I²=95%; the larger this number, the less the studies agree with one another). And it measures the greenery around where people live, which has nothing to do with how often you go to the park. People who live in green places also tend to be richer, have cleaner air and exercise more, and these things can't be separated from greenery to tell which one is doing the work. Don't read it as “going to the park lengthens your life”; the usable part is counting green space when choosing where to live, at zero cost. On the NDVI scale, bare ground and concrete are close to 0, and dense vegetation is close to 1. So “0.1” is roughly the difference between moving from a bare block to a block lined with rows of street trees.
